Pranayama is the ancient yogic practice of controlling your breath. When you regulate your inhalation and exhalation, you take direct control over your autonomic nervous system, rapidly reducing anxiety, improving focus, and boosting mental clarity.
1. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
Nadi Shodhana balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain, lowering blood pressure and promoting deep emotional balance. Sit comfortably, place your right thumb over your right nostril, and inhale slowly through the left. Close the left nostril with your ring finger, release the thumb, and exhale through the right.
2. Box Breathing (Equal 4-Count Breath)
Used by elite athletes and Navy SEALs to maintain supreme focus under extreme stress. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold empty for 4 seconds. Repeat for 5 cycles.
3. Kapalabhati (Skull-Shining Breath)
An energizing breath technique that warms up the abdominal muscles, cleanses the respiratory passages, and boosts morning alertness better than caffeine.
"Control the breath, control the mind. In moments of tension, your breath is your quickest superpower."
4. Ujjayi Breath (Victorious / Ocean Breath)
Created by slightly contracting the back of the throat while breathing deeply through the nose. The soft whispered sound anchors your focus during physical vinyasa holds.
5. 4-7-8 Relaxing Breath
Designed for evening calm and insomnia relief: inhale through the nose for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, and blow gently out through the mouth for 8 counts.
